Organic and eco collection

What is organic and eco?

Organic: Organic textiles are grown in controlled settings with no pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals. Only natural fertilizers are used and the soil and water are monitored. If a fibre is “certified organic” its growing conditions have been monitored and certified by an agency from one of several organic trade associations worldwide.
Eco Fibres: Eco fibres are textiles that do not require any pesticides or chemicals to grow. They are naturally disease free and resistant to mould and mildew. Fibres in this category include: Hemp, linen (flax),Bamboo and Coir (coconut).
There are also eco fibres created from the end product of other processes – generally a food product waste. For example, soy fibre is made from the hulls of soybeans used to make tofu and other soy products. In the past, the waste was thrown away – now it is processed into soy fibre. Other examples of eco fibres that are made from food processes are coconut, milk, corn, and chitin (crab shell).

Why Eco and Organic?

Social Responsibility: We all need to do our part to keep our planet clean – It takes ¼ lb of chemical pesticides and fertilizers to make one regular cotton t-shirt! Chemicals and pesticides invade drinking water and groundwater, polluting its fish and even reaching human consumption. Organic and eco fibres grow without any pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Biodegradable: Eco and organic textiles are earth-friendly and biodegrade naturally over time. Synthetic fibres eventually become waste and let off harmful toxins when they degrade.

Touch: Many people are allergic or dislike wearing synthetic textiles. Eco textiles have all the properties of the new synthetic breathable fibres with added softness and drape. They feel better against the skin.

Absorption: Not only do its chemicals reach into our groundwater, conventional clothing is worn next to our most porous organ - our skin. If nicotine, birth control medication and other drugs are absorbed through patches on our skin, how can we assume that we do not also absorb the chemicals in our clothing? Organic and eco fibres are natural and if they are from Hemptown, do not contain any irritating chemicals. Many of them are considered hypoallergenic and are naturally anti-bacterial.

Popularity: Organic foods have been around for a while but have gained momentum over the past five years. The largest organic consumers make up the huge “baby-boomer” and “echo” markets. Materials once considered to be alternative are now entering the mainstream!
